Horror Bites - Killer Sofa

When going into a movie called Killer Sofa, which is supposed to be about a recliner that is enchanted by a girl and commits murders as crimes of passion, you figure it would be one of two things. A sleazy as hell, nudity filled low budget romp, or a tongue in cheek wise-cracking chair that murders and quips with the best of them. A fun mix of both those things would also be an expected outcome and still work. What I wasn't expecting, was a slow burn movie with some very low key comedy played completely straight where it seems like most people are on some sort of sedative. I admit this happens to me a lot, and it is my fault completely. But with a name like Killer Sofa, I was expecting something with a bit more pizazz. It's not that the movie doesn't get behind its killer chair premise, but it felt like they needed to explain it's existence. Everything from how the chair came to be, why it kills, and all the little details about it's past. The need for an explanation bogs the film down with flashbacks and scenes where an antique dealer with the "gift" uses exposition to talk about a chair that kills. It may just be me, but I don't need an in-depth reason for why it's a murdering recliner. It takes the oomph of crazy away from itself when the characters try to rationalize something this bizarre. The idea is already funny and weird, but the movie wants to make it fit into a reality where it's a normal thing to have a chair kill because of revenge. That it was enchanted by a woman who wasn't allowed to love someone, so she killed herself and the spirit of her lover haunts the chair and murders for her, while also taking the time to sex up the main character. Personally, I would have been good with "magic chair falls in love with owner and murders those who love her in fits of jealousy." I think a bit of simplicity in the story would have helped this movie. Even at eighty minutes, I was time checking to see when it would end. I wouldn't recommend Killer Sofa to anyone but the most die-hard bad movie fan. While the fun concept is in place, the movie just drags along at a snail's pace and isn't really rewarding when something wild and crazy actually happens. Like a recliner killing someone. It lacks the sleaze or insanity it needs to make it a memorable watching experience. Although I will say, it's better than Death Bed - The Bed That Eats.
